Tongass Aircraft Pilots Association
This group has an excellent website covering the SE region. Particular emphasis on the Ketchikan and Juneau area. This Fly2AK website links page includes a section covering their relevant links. My sincere appreciation to the hard work and time by the Tongass Aircraft Pilots Association!
Special Traffic Procedures for Ketchikan & Juneau Areas
2019 saw two tragic accidents in these high-traffic areas. AOPA played a leading role in working with the FAA and local commercial aircraft operators to both analyze and improve existing flight procedures.
FAR Part 93 covers Ketchikan & Juneau Notices, Associated Data and Procedures. FAR Part 93 renews every 56 days. Current issue here: link (34 mb download).
In addition to Part 93, there are numerous additional documents. For instance, there are high-density aircraft route diagrams for Juneau, Ketchikan and Skagway. Comments below.
SE Alaska Aviation Overview
Excellent overview of the high-density traffic areas, unique CTAF frequencies in these areas and specific flight routes (link). However, the Juneau area map in this PDF is fuzzy/hard to read. Here is a version as of March 2020.
Ketchikan Onward
Local commercial operators publish an outstanding airspace guide (link). For instance, there are excellent maps, reporting points and frequencies. Here is another source for possibly updated versions (left side of page).
If you plan to do customs at Ketchikan PAKT or Juneau PAJN please take time to read the appropriate section in the Part 93 Chart Supplement. Wrangell Island also has customs.
Visiting Ketchikan
Ketchikan is an interesting airport and town. For example, the airport is on a island, with a ferry that runs every 1/2 hour. Hotels and restaurants are across the channel. Be aware Ketchikan is a big cruise ship destination. The town is crowded during the day.
This is a busy airport. All types of traffic. For instance, there are large jets, numerous piston aircraft and many helicopters. When there with my Super Cub, a private Blackhawk helicopter landed right next to me for customs processing. Interesting experience trying to hold the Cub down.
The “narrows” between the town and airport is extremely busy with seaplane traffic. Rental cars available at the airport. Hotels in town seem reasonably priced and restaurant options are plentiful.
Continuing Up The Coast
The flight up the coast from Ketchikan is magnificent. There is a lot of boat traffic. Trees literally come right down to the water. Hence there are few if any emergency landing options. Tip: Fly during low tide periods. The shallow areas are exposed offering rough yet survivable emergency landing options.
Juneau Area
Commercial operators in the Juneau area also produce an outstanding (!!) document covering local routes, frequencies, reporting points and maps. Link here. Here is another source for possibly updated versions (left side of page).
Approaching Juneau–Sightseeing
Approaching the Juneau area, if the weather is good to great, take the opportunity to overfly the Mendenhall Glacier area, perhaps cutting the corner on your way to Haines/Skagway. Refer to the Juneau High Density Traffic Area inset on your current sectional chart. Here’s a version of this map captured in Feb 2020. This is a VERY busy area–keep your eyes open for a LOT of fixed wing and helicopter traffic!!
As noted several times, on the coastal routes, whether from Vancouver, Ketchikan or Wrangell, trees literally come right down to the water. There are very, very few landing spots if you need to set it down. At low tide you have a few more options.
